ThAct: Research and Writing

 Research and Writing

This blog has been assigned by Prakruti Ma’am as a part of our academic writing and research studies coursework. In it, I explore key elements of research methodology by following the principles outlined in the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers. Research is not simply about gathering facts; it is a structured and disciplined process that involves analytical thinking, strategic planning, and accurate referencing.

In this blog, I address two essential questions: How is research conducted? and Why is topic selection important? While working on these questions, I realized that research starts with curiosity, progresses through systematic inquiry, and gains value through clear organization and proper citation. This assignment encouraged me to examine my own approach to research and recognize how crucial it is to choose a clear, specific, and manageable topic before beginning any scholarly project.

 1. How do we conduct research? (Explain with the example of your research work)

A. Understanding Research According to the MLA Handbook

The MLA Handbook presents research as a structured and thoughtful investigation of sources that support a clear topic or thesis. It emphasizes that research is a gradual process that develops through several important stages.

Initial Exploration:
Before beginning to write, a researcher should engage in background reading through encyclopedias, reference books, scholarly articles, and reliable websites. This early reading helps build foundational knowledge and refine the research focus.

Using Library and Digital Resources:
The Handbook encourages the use of academic libraries, online catalogs, and scholarly databases to locate credible books and journal articles relevant to the topic.

Online Searching:
Researchers should make effective use of digital catalogs and search engines to identify suitable materials and assess whether they are relevant to their research question.

Preparing a Working Bibliography:
It is essential to maintain a record of all potential sources, including complete publication details. A working bibliography helps organize research and prevents confusion later.

Assessing Source Credibility:
Each source must be carefully evaluated for its reliability, authority, timeliness, and relevance before being included in the research.

Note-Taking:
Systematic and organized note-taking allows researchers to collect key arguments, evidence, and quotations that will later shape their writing.

Preventing Plagiarism:
Proper citation of all borrowed ideas and quotations is necessary to acknowledge original authors and maintain academic integrity.

B. Application in My Research Project

While working on my research topic, “The Role of Digital Media in Preserving Indigenous Languages,” I followed a similar process.

Background Study:
I began by reading introductory materials and scholarly overviews to understand the concepts of digital media and language preservation.

Refining the Focus:
After gaining basic knowledge, I narrowed my topic to examine how digital platforms contribute to the revitalization of endangered languages, making it more specific and manageable.

Locating Academic Sources:
I searched databases such as JSTOR and Google Scholar using targeted keywords like “digital media and language revitalization” and “social media and indigenous languages.”

Selecting Reliable Sources:
I prioritized peer-reviewed articles published within the last decade to ensure both credibility and relevance.

Maintaining a Source List:
I created a continuously updated document containing full bibliographic details and brief notes about each source.

Note Organization:
From every article, I summarized important arguments, collected useful quotations, and identified how the information supported my thesis.

Drafting and Citing:
Finally, I organized my notes into an outline and drafted the paper, incorporating sources with accurate MLA in-text citations and a properly formatted Works Cited page.

Overall, my research experience closely followed the systematic approach recommended in the MLA Handbook, demonstrating how structured steps lead to effective and ethical academic writing.

2. Short Note on: Selection of a Topic

A. Meaning and Importance of Topic Selection

Choosing a topic is the foundation of any research project and one of the most crucial decisions a researcher makes. The MLA Handbook emphasizes beginning with a broad subject that sparks your curiosity. From there, you should engage in preliminary reading to explore different angles and possibilities within that subject. This early exploration helps you identify a specific direction. Ultimately, the topic must be narrowed down so that it is clear, focused, and suitable for the length and requirements of the assignment.

B. Guidelines for Selecting an Effective Topic

Personal Interest:
Select a subject that genuinely captures your attention. When you are interested in your topic, the research process becomes more meaningful and motivating.

Balanced Scope:
Ensure that the topic is neither too wide nor too limited. A broad topic can become difficult to manage, while an overly narrow one may not provide enough material for thorough analysis.

Source Availability:
Before finalizing your topic, perform initial searches in academic catalogs and databases to make sure sufficient reliable sources are available to support your research.

Flexibility in Approach:
Be open to adjusting your topic as your understanding deepens. Research often leads to new insights, and refining your focus is a natural and necessary part of the process.
